Broker of Record vs Broker License Reciprocity

Broker license reciprocity sounds like a shortcut, but only about 20 US states offer it, and even the friendliest agreements still require a state-portion exam, certification of licensure, and a background check per state. California, Florida, New York, Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii offer no full reciprocity.

How does reciprocity compare to broker of record engagement?

Reciprocity typically takes 4 to 14 weeks per state and is applied for individually in each state. Broker of record engagement instead associates an already-licensed broker with your firm's filing, so it does not follow the pre-license education and examination timeline.

What does reciprocity actually cover?

Reciprocity is per-state and per-license — you still owe continuing education, renewals, and E&O insurance in every state where you hold a reciprocal license.
